2020 Scholarship Award Recipients

Performance-based Standards (PbS) is pleased to announce the four outstanding applicants selected to receive the 2020 PbS Scholarship Awards. The PbS Scholarship Fund was established in 2016 and as of 2020 PbS has given out a total of $30,000 in Scholarship awards. The winners are selected based on application essays that describe how the scholarship will be used to further their education and “pay it forward.”

This year PbS received 11 applications from three youths and eight staff. We recognize we did not receive as many applications as usual, most likely due to COVID-19 and the uncertainty of traditional schooling in the near future. PbS was able to award $6000 in scholarships this year, split among two youths and two staff.

The winners selected are:

· Victor Santoyo, Probation Correctional Officer at Stanislaus County Juvenile Hall in California- Modesto, CA, studying Criminal Justice at the Merced Community College and plans to complete their Associates in Criminal Justice;

· Halle Neslon, Rehabilitation Technician at Juvenile Corrections Center- St. Anthony in St. Anthony, ID, studying Criminal Justice at the University of Idaho and hopes to one day proceed to their Master’s in Social Work;

· A student from Connecticut Junior Republic - REGIONS Staff Secure Program, CT, will continue their education at Gateway Community College to begin a career in automotive services and;

· A student from Ferris School, DE, will continue their education at Genesee Community College in NY.

Congratulations to our four amazing recipients and thank you to everyone that applied for the 2020 PbS Scholarship Award.

The PbS Youth Coordinator position was created in 2019 to ensure PbS’ work includes input and feedback from the youths we serve. The first coordinator was hired thanks to support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation and is focusing on initiatives to grow the Education and Employment Foundation to reach more youths.

PbS has been a partner in assisting this facility to become a dynamic work environment that is not satisfied with maintaining the status quo.
